It’s official. And, it’s oh, so exciting. The color of the year 2020 announcements have started. What will we see this year? I think the world of design is softening. While bold statements and high contrast will always be popular, this year’s picks will most likely feature muted tones with a balanced vibe.
Pantone Color of the Year 2020
It’s here! It’s here! The Pantone Color of the Year 2020 was announced Wednesday, December 4th…Classic Blue.
This year’s choice has been identified as comfortable and relatable…a calm in the storm of political and social unrest around the world. Others are wondering if it’s a return to traditional. Myself? I believe it’s the perfect way to ground people in what they know, while allowing them to create their own version of style. Contemporary? Classic Blue fits. Traditional? It’s an ideal hue. Rustic? Hints of blue are always showing up. No matter the style you identify with, blue is there, in whatever level you need it to be. It’s like that lifelong friend–no matter how long it’s been, when you’re together, it’s as if no time has passed. That’s the relationship many of us have with blue.
This year’s palette of choices was, as always, announced in conjunction with New York Fashion Week in September. Described as a range of coastal-inspired hues, noting calmness and soothing rhythms, from the softness of driftwood beige, to the serenity of greens and blues. Last year’s Living Coral was a nod to colorful comfort in a continually shifting environment. Always a subtle political and social statement, I continually look forward to their selection.
Sherwin Williams Stays Classic
Always in style, Sherwin Williams selected Naval as the Color of the Year 2020. This captivating version of Navy Blue is capable of both nostalgia and a modern vibe in delicate balance.
They chose well. Gold and brass finishings add dynamic statements to blues. They’ve also collaborated with West Elm to create stunning backdrops this year. Naval is definitely one to love.
Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2020
The paint mogul, Beni Moore, has made the announcement of their upcoming color trends for 2020.
The top pick? First Light. It’s making a statement for a new decade–fresh, soft and uplifting. It’s nice to know that my palette styling for Revi’s room is still on trend! (Not that I wouldn’t love it either way!)
Behr’s Color of the Year 2020
The paint company, Behr, has chosen Back to Nature as it 2020 Color of the Year.
Described as calming, with the ability to soften any space, this shade of green plays up the idea that many of us are attempting to capture the essence of the natural world in our homes.
PPG Color of the Year 2020
PPG has made its selection. Chinese Porcelein is a vibrant blue, with the ability to add distinct contrast with whites, pairing beautifully with gold and brass accents.
The name–linked with chinoiserie, the ginger jars of traditional Chinese storytelling–celebrates the past, while guiding us into the future.
Sherwin Williams
Sherwin Williams will probably be the next to announce their color of the year 2020, and they are already paving the way to what’s popular. They have chosen the color palette, and it’s filled with 45 swoon-worthy shades. I think I have some major inspiration for my decor based on this list. I’m loving the soothing hues in Mantra. But, Haven has a few of my favorite colors. Granite Peak? Acacia Haze? Yes, please.
I really like how their site works. Typing in the color you want to see, you can adjust the tones lighter and darker, and they also give you pairing suggestions. What a fun way to play with color.

I’ll admit it. I love decorating with color. Even in small doses, I think splashes of color can alter the atmosphere of a space. Color enhances the character of a room, imbibes personality and creates dimension. What colors are my favorites?
Behr’s Color of the Year 2019 Blueprint
I am always drawn to blues. And, I think they just never go out of style. From the deep, melancholy of navy, to the light, airy softness of aqua–blue offers such a range, with the ability to play on emotion. When it comes to color combinations, this past year has me loving green and pink pairings. Which way will I go in the coming year? The anticipation of cold weather has me thinking ahead to some indoor projects.
