Transforming the Playroom
When you have small children, your home sees an evolution. From tummy time, to Lego toys, the spaces in your home have to be versatile. We have a playroom that we established from the moment we moved into this house. But, as kids grow, things change. This is my story of transforming the playroom…
Necessities of a Playroom
With kids, storage is essential. Artwork needs a place. Our playroom was a combo of organized chaos and the space designated for fun. In Chicago, the winters are long. We lived in here.
Over time–and with three kids–a large collection and age range of toys had accumulated. Trying to offer age appropriate toys turned into a game, otherwise known as: How do I keep the baby from eating the Legos?
As I mentioned, this room had been designed when my we moved into this house–my oldest was an only–he was 16 months old.
Once we finished the basement, they just kind of outgrew the playroom. To be honest, it was a combination of heartbreak and relief. So many of our family memories were made here. But, it’s kind of nice to think about transforming the playroom into a more usable space. Especially this one–it was in desperate need of a makeover.
A Slow Epiphany
Many times, when an idea comes to me, like transforming the playroom, it stirs. As much as I try to ignore it, I can’t. This is why I have a million projects going on at once. I have to start on it, or it eats away at me and my concentration. Shopping one day, I stumbled upon this…
At the same time, summer was drawing to a close. Because I had been considering bringing the herbs into our house, from the vertical garden, it slowly came to me that this might be the right space for the plants. I would love to have a room in our home that’s a little bit boho, a little modern, a little nature-inspired. Could transforming the playroom into this space be a reality?
Transforming the Playroom
I made it happen. The playroom went from a chaotic mess, to a beautiful space that combines modern boho and plant life. A perfect spot for family time. I think I included just the right balance of adult style and kid fun.
