The One Room Challenge Week 1: A New Look for the Master Bedroom
Eeeek! It’s Week One of the One Room Challenge, a bi-annual event where featured designers makeover a room in six weeks. And, for the fun of it, people who want to play along can be guests. That’s me! For the challenge, I’m doing a makeover of a previously done master bedroom makeover. Is it story time?
Once upon a time, there was a busy mom with three children, five and under. Her husband was traveling to places like India, China & Switzerland for work. So she decided to pass the time by doing a master bedroom makeover. The End.
Just kidding…that’s actually what happened three years ago, and while it’s a true story, the story isn’t over yet. Here’s what the master bedroom looked like when we bought this place.
It was ugly, but I saw its hidden potential. I painted the room a beautiful shade of greige and added some yellow and gold accents. I had put together a gallery wall for just the two of us, bought new bedding, window treatments were installed, and the space really came together.
But, it’s been three years, and we’ve got some unfinished business.
Let’s Get to It.
I’ve got something to get off my chest…
There’s so much work still left to be done in this house!
There. I said it. Phew. I feel better.
Because I work in digital marketing, and my life is dictated by deadlines, I only finish things I don’t want to do when I HAVE TO. I have a whole bunch of dirty details to tell you about…some little things that hubs doesn’t EVEN know we are doing yet. That’s coming next week–so stay tuned!
The Mood Board
One of my initial inspirations for this bedroom makeover was this plant. It’s an Aglaonema, and it’s these stunning shades of green. It deserves a moody, somewhat modern space.
When it comes to paint colors, I have been dying to try a navy. I grabbed a few swatches, as you can see here. But, they’re pulling green, right? So, we’ll see which direction the wall color goes.
I love grays and whites in home decor. Lately, I’ve been diggin’ the super trendy look of camel accents. And, these pillows are calling my name.
We also have a couple wall features we are planning. One involves the most stubborn hickory hardwood I’ve ever met. The other is shiplap. Who doesn’t love a shiplap feature wall???
The swatch here is from the dreamy window shades that will be going in just before the reveal.
And, I’m still on the fence about whether to keep my beloved roll-top desk in this space, or replace it with that gorgeous chair…

The two colors you see here are Behr’s Blue Metal and PPG’s High Salute.
The window shade fabric comes from the Provenance Woven Woods collection, from Hunter Douglas, called Rustica, the material is Tin Roof. We are collaborating with Skyline Window Coverings for this project.

We are making these shelves, but if you want to order some, they are available on Amazon.
The Aglaonema is a pretty easy houseplant to care for. It doesn’t care for a huge amount of light, and it can be forgotten about and stay pretty happy, so it’s a perfect plant for the bedroom.
This chair is totally the vibe I’m going for, but we’ll see if it wins out over my desk. Find it on Amazon.
Let’s Hang Out!
I’ll be doing some play-by-plays, DIYs and installs over on Instagram, so follow me there if you want to see daily progress. I’d love to here your thoughts on our picks. And check back next week to see some reveals of the details we are working on in the coming week!
