Plant Wall Inspiration: 13 Ways to Display Plants & Herbs
Would you love a plant wall or vertical herb garden of your own? Whether inside or outside, creating a living wall, or vertical garden is the perfect way to uplift your mood, surround you with beautiful greens & flowers, and even provide the herbs you love so you don’t have to run to the store for them!
A couple of years back, Scott and I created our Vertical Garden. It was a massive success, making space for all of the herbs we use on a regular basis. I added flowers for pops of color and visual interest. For details, visit this IGTV tour I created. And, with the Spring 20201 ORC, we even moved it to a new location. See the update.
This year, we may be making big changes, so I’ve been looking for plant wall inspo every chance I get. As you know, nothing is safe in Chicagoland until after Mother’s Day, so you might as well just wait out the frost. Or, if you’re a crazy plant lover like I am, you could plant things–and just keep them indoors.
Our playroom became the plant room, or as I like to call it “eternal summer,” and I have managed to keep a handful of herbs alive ALL winter. They transition back outside in the middle of May each year.
Back to plant wall inspiration. I get spring fever pretty bad every year–maybe even worse with social distancing being the norm for the second spring season–yikes. Let’s take a look at a variety of plant wall inspiration together. I’d love to know what you’re planning for your home!
A Cozy Space for a Plant Wall
If you’re a plant lover, this patio area probably looks like an absolute dream. What’s better than a comfy chair, next to your favorite greens–the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee in solitude. Victoria & Tony of @bungalow_renovation created this adorable space.
Entertaining with a Chic Patio
If you need the ideal accent for your outdoor entertaining space, take a look at Corey’s plant wall from @revealmydiy. Not only is this space beautiful, but you can change up the look by choosing different plants. Herbs, trailing greenery–whatever you decide, it will enhance the atmosphere of your patio space! A Succulent Garden
Succulents have always had a place in my heart, but I’ll be honest. They terrified me. Until a couple of years ago. I turned a corner on how to care for them, and I’ve even propagate them regularly, so you’ll be seeing even more of these beauties in my gardening. One page you can visit to see unending succulents is @succulent_treasure_chest on Instagram. This vertical plant wall is a dream come true!
A Staycation Getaway
With social distancing still a lingering notion, you may be staying home, like many of us! If you’re looking to create a backyard oasis, check out this spot by @fait.nola. These planters were created to help you design your own plant wall. Visit their page to see the “in process” look of this gorgeous space. Visit their site for more info.

Grow Those Herbs
I will be the first one to tell you how awesome it was to have fresh herbs right outside our door all summer long. We cooked with thyme, basil and sage. I made infused water with rosemary and lavender. But, Mallorie, of @wallartfortheheart, took her herb garden up a notch by labeling them. How adorable is this little garden she created? Shop Mallorie\’s Etsy shop for cute signs and decor.
A Color Coordinated Living Wall
Have you seen those designer walls, all color coordinated and stylish? The talent found on @just_planted_it is incredible. Mostly full of close-ups of garden life, from insects to succulents, you’ll be inspired by the unique captures you’ll see, in addition to coordinating the growth on these living walls.
Fairy Tale Charm
There’s something about a backyard brick wall that’s full of romantic charm. Add greenery to that wall? I’m simply in heaven. From Lee, of @leesupercharged, you’ll be inspired to weave gardening throughout your life, with nutrition and health tips. Visit her blog about incorporating growing veggies and greens.
Plants, Plants, Plants
It can be really hard to choose photos for my articles, especially when I stumble upon a page like Marlin has, from @marlinsplants. So much inspo. So many plants. And, a ton of ways to display them! This “hanging ladders” planter wall had me swooning!
But, because I didn’t want to choose just one, I’ve got another for you! Home to over 130 plants, this plant mama’s life is #goals.
Succulent Charm
And, then there’s Whitney, of @newsucculentgirl, who is a genius when it comes to succulent growth! She created this adorable version of a plant wall for her little ones. She also chose this aqua color for additional charm, and it just happens to be my favorite.
This was another page where I couldn’t choose just one. If you’re looking for inspo, you have to follow this chick–her Instagram is full of beautiful shots.
