The Pantone Colors in Home Design
With last week’s Pantone Palette announcement, it seems that we have a lot to look forward to in 2023! Being cheeky, I quickly renamed the colors as a fun way to introduce them. But, all kidding aside, don’t we just want to see these colors in home design?

If you’re just hearing about this for the first time, let’s take a look at the splash of color that is the 2023 palette…
Just as important, we are going to be seeing a lot of what they are calling the Core Classics. Too colorful to be named as neutrals, this collection is full of hues that offer subtle charm.
The Colors in Design
Right away, the colors look like a Skittles bag exploded as swatches, offering a rainbow of flavor for your next design project. While most homeowners wouldn’t consider putting too many of these colors into their homes, you might be surprised at unexpected pairings.
The Biggest Trends
- No color combination is off-limit! Just take time to understand how colors pair–and more importantly, what YOU like to see
- Midcentury Modern is going strong, with curved elements, minimalistic furniture & wood grains
- Black & White invites any color to make a stunning statement
- Even in open floor plans, pops of color define a space
- Neutral backdrops put accent colors front and center, no matter how bold or subtle
- Color will influence the size of your space
You’ll notice a few common themes as you scroll through. My intention with pointing out these commonalities is to show you how to use color–even if you’re not a big fan of the ones chosen this year. Remember, design is fluid. It evolves, and so can your home. The colors you love might not be in the top 10 this year, but the design elements–and the way they’re being used–can be inspiration for a makeover in your own home.
Colors That Contrast
On the color wheel, colors that are directly opposite each other are called Complementary Colors. These are colors that add bold design just by sharing a space. But, just look what happens when those same colors are muted…
The two colors used in the bold design above are the base of the two soft colors in the dining space below. Colors don’t have to be loud or vibrant to create contrast or strong design. Sometimes, the best contrasts happen in quiet spaces.
Colors That Charm
On the other hand, the Color Wheel features colors that sit right next to each other. Those colors are referred to as Analogous Colors, and while the colors can be bold, they coordinate quite well with each other.
Mixing analogous colors–yellow and green–might not seem be high on your list of top choices, but look how fun they can be together. By using two colors so closely related, you can create depth in unique ways.
All in the Family
When colors used in a design scheme belong to the same color family, it\’s known as Monochromatic. This can be done with one single shade of a color used throughout a space. When you choose to feature a monochromatic design, play up the appeal by highlighting it with a complementary color. The greens paired with the wood paneling allows the whole look to come together beautifully, while not overwhelming the space with greens.
This bedroom uses the blue color family to style this space, highlighted by the contrasting white board and batten. A fun way to use the same color family is with the pillows, bedding and window treatments. By inviting varying hues, textures & patterns, you can create a space that looks design-friendly and fresh, but feels calm and relaxing.
Midcentury Modern
Curved furniture and fixtures. Soft shapes. Eccentric lighting. Low profile furniture. Wood paneling on the ceiling. The design elements of Midcentury Modern certainly are going strong. And colors in home design? Greens, browns and orange…who knew this could work?
Black & White
There’s nothing quite as statement-making as black, white and _________. That’s right! It’s a blank space. You choose your favorite color to mix with black and white, and it’s an instant win.
Colorful walls play so nicely with black and white elements. These double accent walls in an otherwise neutral living room highlight the design, even calling attention to the black and white elements.
Create Open Floor Plan Spaces
The open floor plan is one of the most sought-after home layouts. Because homes were not traditionally built with the open floor plan in mind, those being built today offer a contemporary design. And while they can be popular, this layout can sometimes appear cold. How do you create cozy spaces? Use furniture and area rugs to designate the intention of areas in your home. From there, colors can tie sections of your home together.
Neutral Backdrops Make Colors Pop
Love your neutrals? There’s nothing wrong with that! In an effort to add energy to the overall look of a neutral space, bring in an accent color. This table and chair set adds a surprising burst of color for a fun element that livens up the look of this patio space.
Designs in Small Spaces
Color is a great way to highlight the design of a small space. This dining nook was designed to appear larger, with wide, horizontal, black & white stripes. The clear chairs are a terrific way to open up the look of the space, as well, making sure not to hide that stunning upholstered seating.
Designs in Large Spaces
One way to ensure your large space doesn’t come off as cold, is by adding color that captures the eye. This entryway uses a monochromatic theme to remove the intimidation of the high ceilings. Entering this home, your eyes would be drawn to the textured green walls, feeling warmth from the green, while the black and white flooring accompanies the design for a sophisticated finish.
