The Bathroom Makeover Reveal!

Reveal day is here! We are wrapping up the Spring 2023 One Room Challenge by showing off all of the work that has been done to transform this space over the last 8 weeks. The Before Photos

Shortly after moving in 10 years ago, we decorated the bathroom. My husband added this tile accent wall. This bathroom was in need of a makeover. Being a small space–and heavily used–it was hard to imagine working on it for 8 weeks. But, this is why I love the ORC. Most of the time, these spaces cause a bit of a disruption in life, but at the end of 8 weeks, it all comes together!

The rest of the bathroom was pretty much a blank slate. It’s actually shocking to see how bare it is, now that the bathroom makeover has been done.

I’m pretty excited to show off this design. It was a lot of work, but the result is stunning.

The Vanity Light

I showed off this beautiful light from Kichler during the planning phase, but I kept it a secret that I could show off in the reveal. It’s so beautifully delicate. I love that it came in a frosted glass–powder rooms tend to get overpowered by vanity lights if you’re not careful.

The Accessories Collection

You know I love to repurpose anything I can. The towel holder, toilet paper holder and metal garbage can were ones I already had. I scuff sanded them with 320 grit sandpaper, cleaned with mineral spirits and sprayed several coats. The tissue box holder was a thrift store find. I used two different spray paints. The garbage can was sprayed with Krylon Fusion All-In-One Spray Paint in Metallic Gold. It’s not quite as yellow as the other elements in the bathroom. It’s a bit more muted and flat–very pretty. But, once I sprayed the towel holder, I knew I needed a different option.

The other spray paint I’ve used is this Rustoleum in Vintage Gold, but I couldn’t find this exact color, although it would have been the best sheen to match what I needed. I ended up using the Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze from Krylon for the other items–including the toilet flush handle. The color ON the can looks almost gray, but it’s definitely a rich, dark brown. It looks amazing against this wallpaper.

The Decor

Another secret…as soon as the wallpaper was installed, I started decorating the floating shelves. The ceramic canisters are an Aldi find, but check out these from Amazon–I like the two different heights, perfect for storing any bathroom items you might need: Short & Tall. Everything else? I shopped my home. The vintage bell and rusted roses have been favorites for a couple years now, but they definitely work best in this space. I found them in a local vintage shop.

I have always loved ampersands, so you’ll see them randomly placed in my home. Even that candle…I found it shoved in the back of our master closet. Why, Juliette, why?!? The framed poem was read at our wedding. It’s a poem from Sex & the City…if you were a fan, you’d recognize it right away.

Mirror

I went store to store in an attempt to find a mirror that looked the way I wanted, in the size, shape and color I needed. The vanity is 24 inches wide, so I was thinking I needed one the same or smaller. Not finding anything else, I bought this one from Target, even though it was 26 inches. It works perfectly in this small space–it’s dramatic, but the natural wood tones ensure that it doesn’t overwhelm the space.

The Door Pull

This was the LAST thing I did. I had already announced out loud (to myself) that I was done. I went to take photos, and I realized I was–indeed–NOT finished. In the fall of 2020, I bought this dark bronze door pull for our pocket door…the same time I purchased the one for the Master Bath. I’m under 3 years for install…that works, right? I really need to put a fresh coat of paint on the door, but..another project for another day.

The Board & Batten Complications

Of course, like any project, there are 11th hour complications. I had waited to finish the last bit of the board and batten. The smallest wall housed the only outlet and light switch. My advice? Figure out your plan for the smallest wall before you do anything to the other walls. The board and batten top met exactly where the light switch was placed…because why wouldn’t it? So I had created a type of *platform* for the switch and plate. But, my first go-round was not my favorite. I knew if I left it, I wouldn’t be happy. And, I put too much work into this space to be unhappy. So, I re-worked it. That included me installing the light switch incorrectly for at least 45 minutes, wondering why it wasn’t working. Gahhhhh!

Then, after putting the vanity in place to cut the last pieces of baseboard, I jammed my nail gun on the VERY LAST nail. So, in utter rage, I got a finishing nail and hammer–which of course nailed in sideways. I was like a woman scorned. I took a deep breath, ripped it off and started over. I had to take apart the nail gun to remove the jam. Sometimes, you just have to step away.

It all turned out beautiful, so I think the frustrations were worth it.
