My Green Powder Room: Floral Mural, Slat Wall, Artwork & More
If the title doesn’t give away the contents of my green powder room, I don’t know what will! This bathroom will go down in my design history as one of the prettiest spaces I’ve created. It’s hard not to just sit in there and stare.
The Mood Board
I knew I wanted this space to feature green walls with a floral mural wallpaper. The slats were an addition I fell in love with while browsing green rooms. It’s not a big space, so how in the world would I ever fit all of this inspo in?
The Before
This space was actually a closet/bathroom prior to this renovation. Let me explain. The door leading into this bathroom originally lead into a 24″ deep hall closet. Right on the other side of the back wall of the closet was the actual bathroom. It was a ridiculously long powder room where the entry door was inside of the pass-through from the kitchen to the dining room.
The Renovation
We decided that the space would be much better used as a bathroom, entering from the hallway. The original bathroom section and pass-through turned into my walk-in pantry. (The dining room is now my office, so no need for a pass-through.) What’s funny about the whole thing is that the toilet is in the EXACT SAME SPOT.
Walls Going Up
We did not install the walls ourselves. We had a gentleman who was already doing all the work for the kitchen, so this was part of that project. One thing I should mention is that we also planned to add a small closet at the back of this space, a 24″ gap that was leftover after the fridge was recessed back into the old bathroom vanity space.
Prime + Paint
We primed the new walls, and when I say “we,” I mean I had a little helper. He does good work.
I had gone back and forth about colors–I knew I wanted a green powder room. I taped some swatches up so I could see how this “window-less” room would appear.
In the end, I chose Conifer Green by Behr. This is the color I had loved from an accent I did at our old house right before we moved. It felt right, and it looked good with the wallpaper. (I also ended up using this color on the cabinets in the Laundry Room last fall, as well as my slat wall in the guest room.)
The Floral Mural
I have been dreaming of this floral mural for months, and deciding to put it in this bathroom came with challenges. I loved the print, and I loved the idea of it being on ONE wall, but because the space is so small, I wasn’t sure how to make a mural work…they come sized according to what you order. I ended up deciding to creating an “L” shape mural, and it ended up being perfect. I love how it turned out–even if I would have done a few things differently in the process, but that’s a blog for another day.

The Slat Wall
It’s a small space, but it deserves a design moment. I needed to add decorative accents on the wall across from the toilet that didn’t take up space, but also filled the space with some texture and design. Slat walls–even when they are small accents–are a great option in this way. I love how this narrow section of slats adds dimension. I chose to pair it with artwork, but you could also use a mirror.

The Quarter Bath
You’ve heard of a half bath, right? Well, we had a “quarter bath” for a couple of weeks. The toilet went in immediately after the wallpaper was hung. Luckily, hubs can install a toilet, and because we weren’t moving it, there was no plumbing work to be done. The vanity, on the other hand, was on hold. We had to wait for the plumber to come hook everything up, but that didn’t keep the children from feeling free to use the toilet. So, we decided to at least place the vanity in there with a bottle of hand sanitizer. I un-boxed it–excited to get in in place. Unfortunately, they sent us two of the same legs that were designed to cross each other and insert, which meant they would have to be opposite of each other. We spent at least 45 minutes trying to flip, turn and insert them. I looked up videos and product guides. Definitely two of the same leg. Sigh. In the end, we used our multi-tool to cut out a section so they would fit together. I’m not even posting this photo…it was a frustrating part of this project. But, these are the types of glitches that happen with DIY projects and online orders, right?
Temporary Privacy
There was no door. Why, you ask? Well, the framing for the door had to be done AFTER the flooring was installed. With no door, and lots of people in and out of our house, I decided to create a temporary privacy situation. It definitely had some *speak easy* vibes, but it was a good solution while we waited for floors and doors. I hung curtain rod hardware on the door frame, and a tie-back on one side. These were extra curtains we had from a previous Christmas decorating situation. It worked.
The Vanity Light
The search for the vanity light was tricky. I wanted to make sure to get the style right for the space. I had to try to match the sink faucet I had chosen–this is a constant problem when you go with brass because of the wide range of variations. The size was also limiting. I had selected a narrow vanity–in an effort to not make it feel like we were squeezing too much in. That meant I couldn’t go with my original choice. Small, windowless rooms are also notorious for being tricky when it comes to lighting–you want to make it bright enough, but not too bright so it shines in everyone’s eyes. I ordered a few different lights, and I was lucky to end up finding one that checked all the boxes. It’s a bit mid-century, a unique choice, and the lighting shines well in the space.

Green Powder Room Reveal
Here it is…my green powder room. This definitely came together–even better than I expected. It’s just this beautiful creation that brightens my day every time I walk by. And, as pretty as it is, it still smells like pee. I think my boys go in there in the dark, no lights, just hoping for the best. Sigh.
