ORC Week 3: Laundry Room Demo!
Week 3 of the One Room Challenge is here, and we have been doing a ton of demo. Okay…not a ton. But, you get the idea. We are moving right along in this project…
Laundry Room Demo: Cabinet, Shelving, Sink
If you’re following along on Instagram, you saw my post last week about removing the wall cabinet. AKA Dumb Ways to Die. But, I didn’t die. Therefore, I have just fueled the fire of “I can do it myself” and “How hard can it be?” delusional thinking.
We also had some open shelving that would be coming down. I left the sink up to Scott, since he had to do a little pipe disconnecting to do.
The cabinet wasn’t even attached to the wall so it came out easily. We walked it to the curb, and the faucet was gone before the morning.
One of my favorite parts of this laundry room demo? Watching the plexiglass wall coverings being removed.
The wall opposite the laundry area has one coat rack that runs the entire length of the space, but there’s two doors that open against them, so it’s never been super functional. One small rack was also removed.
The Current Flooring
There is a *lovely* old laminate in the room now. It’s stained and ugly and I can’t wait for it to be gone. We had planned to use the wood grain LVP that we put in the rest of the first floor. It’s a great product for dogs and kids and lots of pool water from dripping children. When adults come to visit, they’re horrified to see the water on the floor. But, it doesn’t stress me out, beyond someone slipping. It wipes up easy enough, and the floor doesn’t get damaged. It’s pretty to look at. This just the phase of life we are in. So the plan was to just continue it into the laundry room. Then, Scott started investigating…
Should We Tile?
Laundry rooms, mudrooms and entryways are a great space for tile. Same thing–tile withstands heavy foot traffic, paw prints and water. Could we tile? He started pulling trim off from around the entry door and all around the floor, which is fine because it’s all part of the laundry room demo anyway. He got his buddy on Face Time, and with tape measure in hand, they talked out the possibilities.
We Are Tiling!
It was determined that we had enough space to tile, once the laminate and wood panel was up.
Scott ran the saw along the floor at a shallow depth, just enough to cut through the flooring to pull it up.
After the last piece of flooring was up, there were A LOT of little staples to pull. I was having flashbacks to last year’s staircase makeover. But, as it turns out, this went much faster, especially when two of us were doing it at the same time.
Next week’s update is going to be all about the flooring. Let’s cross our fingers that it goes smoothly!
