Week 6: Prepping the Walls

Finally, I can say I achieved something during week 6 of this season’s One Room Challenge. The walls are painted. At this point, I shouldn’t be celebrating this, but any progress is still progress. This week was all about prepping the walls for the future treatments. Once again, hubby had a part in creating this space.

The Wall Patches

We had a whole bunch of patching to do. Small nail holes, larger anchor holes, and one really big wall cut-out from where the plumbing of the utility sink had been removed. Scott tackled the patching over the course of a few days.

Sand the Walls

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The beauty of the One Room Challenge is how the weekly updates hold you accountable. This laundry room would NEVER be as far along as it is. I made myself sand the walls. Just a light sanding with a 220 grit. I sanded the patches, but also the entire room–all 4 walls. Some of the walls had a slight paint texturing on them that I wanted to smooth out.

Wipe the Walls

I just used water and a cloth to wipe down the walls–removing dust, cobwebs and any dirt and grime that have been collecting over the years. I let it dry for about a half hour before getting ready to paint.

Paint the Walls

The real hero of week 6 is Handy Products. They sent me this 9 piece Trim and Roll Kit. This thing is amazing. You know how annoying it is to collect everything you need to get ready to paint? EVERYTHING is included. Some of the most useful items: Paint tray, roller tool/frame, microfiber roller cover, a stirring tool that also can be used to open the paint can, snap cup for edging, paint brush, paint can pour “helper,” and a koozie.

Handy Products sent me the kit, but I didn’t have to post about it. I also don’t have to review it, but I’m going to. To begin with, the price of this on Amazon is such a deal for everything you get! This is the nicest roller frame I have ever used–it’s remarkably smooth. The roller cover itself is microfiber, and I will probably buy these going forward. No dripping, no uneven rolls. It was the ideal saturation of paint from the start. And, I’ve always used a wooden stir stick for mixing the paint, but this one is pretty cool since you can open the paint can with one end. It rinses off nicely, and I love that it’s red–so easy to spot when gathering materials. This gets 5 stars from me.
