Week 5: It’s Time for Drywall!
It’s Week 5 of the One Room Challenge, and we have some massive updates happening! Last week I shared that we were having all of the inspections done, with fingers crossed that everything would pass, and we could move onto drywall.
Everything Passed!
We started the week out with a passing score on the plumbing, but we still had to get through the technical/mechanical inspection, as well as insulation. Thursday’s mechanicals were a success–passing with flying colors, and the insulation was passed! We were cleared to finish the project!
Side Note about Insulation
It gets really cold here in the Chicago area in the winter, sometimes with the windchill in the negative double digits. This past winter, we noticed condensation occurring above the doorway leading to the exterior. There was a drastic temperature difference between the edge of the ceiling and farther into the room. Once demo took place, we realized there was just open air flowing. To remedy that, plywood was inserted before insulating, then sealed.
Then, before the actual insulation was put into place, this foam board was added in.
We are hoping not to face any more dripping ceilings this coming winter!
Time for Drywall
It’s amazing how fast these projects can go while someone else is doing them. Have I mentioned how terrible I am at doing drywall?
They started on the ceiling, getting each piece set with screws and measurements marked prior to install. It was cool to watch them start to install each piece, cut the shapes of the recessed light fixtures out, and then finish the install. They have clearly done this before 🙂

Standing at the windows, looking at the brand new spaces created: Pantry Room and Recessed Fridge Area. We had to do a soffit look over the fridge–this is a load bearing wall, so this is where the new header was put into place.
That flat wall on the right? That’s the bathroom, with the entrance in the hallway now. It actually looks really big for just being a “small” powder room! Anyone else notice how far out the kitchen used to be? It’s crazy.
The team is working diligently to finish the taping and mudding process. This is what I dread the most–even more than not having a kitchen for so long. DRYWALL DUST. Yuck. I’m going to be grinning and bearing my way through it. (But, I don’t have to ACTUALLY do it this time. How weird is that???)
The Siding
This shouldn’t be a side note, but I had to fit the progress in somewhere! Our siding guy worked his magic on the exterior, knocking out this project in one day. I’m going to include a “during” photo in case you missed where we were just a couple days ago. (And just look at that hood vent!)
This is kind of how things were for a little while–we were waiting to get the green light from the inspector. And, now it’s done!
Cabinet Update!
We had some issues with a couple cabinets, and they JUST got delivered this morning. Phew. Nothing is stopping us now! I’m excited to see the Emtek hardware with the cabinets and the pendants I ordered. Head to Instagram story highlights for the details!
