Week 6…7 (The Bedroom Makeover Blur!)
It’s week siiiix-seveeeeen. See what I did there? I promise I did not plan that, but sometimes, you’ve gotta just make light of a situation. I couldn’t make a post for week 6 happen. Life is just a blur, so here I am, updating you with all the latest One Room Challenge details on this bedroom makeover blur.
Clearing Out Trash
We had to get all of the trash out. Luckily we *know a guy* who has a truck big enough for just such a job. Our friend Joel owns the company CSSD Inc. He’s out here in the Western Suburbs of Chicago, and he always comes to our rescue. His company typically removed sheds and other building materials, while also pouring new concrete pads for hot tubs, patios and backyard sheds. Joel cannot say no when my husband needs help–so I think that’s his only flaw. He showed up, along with another good friend of ours, to help us create space in the garage. Phew!
New Doors
Speaking of clearing out the trash, all of the original doors in this house were hollow. After 30+ years, hollow doors just feel like junk. Especially these because they aren’t smooth–they are this orange, faux wood texture, splintery mess. Many of them had holes or just chunks out of them. The day before we were going to have the trash removed, Scott decided he had had enough. He didn’t just remove the doors in our bedroom/closet/bathroom, he removed ALL of the second floor doors.
The new doors are beautiful. The doors and flooring was installed by David at DS Carpentry, a very talented young carpenter here in the Western Suburbs.
Annnnd…new doors are a lot of work. I don’t mind painting, it’s the prepping ahead of time that I hate. They have to be sanded slightly–even if they say they are primed and ready for paint. Trust me on this one. I have made mistakes. It doesn’t end well. I have already started filling holes. Next step is to sand, then paint. They’re going to be amazing.

And by the way, I had to go to THREE different Menards to buy the trim for the doors. If you need 7/16 x 3.25 inch trim boards in white pine…I’d wait awhile because I bought every piece I could find!
New Floors & Baseboards
It’s impossible to show off the new floors without revealing the baseboards. (Aren’t they beautiful???) I always try to paint baseboards ahead of time when installing new. That way, you don’t have to worry about getting paint on the floors, and you don’t have to take time to be careful as you paint.
I used my new nail gun for this project. It’s cordless, which is so very nice–no more getting wound up in cords.
Electrical Run
In the midst of the chaos, we had the electrical run on each side of the bed for the sconces I will be having installed. We’ve always had lamps, so this was a big discussion–what should the function be? How should they turn on and off? Single switch, three-way…yikes. We finally decided to keep the outlet hot with the entry switch, letting the sconces turn on and off at the entry, but they also have switches directly beneath, so they can be turned on and off while in bed.
Fan Removed
Our outdated fan is gone! This fan could only be turned off and on with the help of a ladder because, even standing on the bed, I was too short to reach the pull cord. I cannot wait to have a fan that I can actually control.

Ready for Beams
One of the last projects we have planned for this room are the ceiling beams. After a lengthy trip to Menards, I have the supplies. Are we gonna make it? It’s going to be a busy 9 days.
